Element Meditations
Author: Starhawk & Francesca DeGrandis
Air Meditation
- Face Eastward, sit comfortably or lie down. Ground and center, then release all tension and worries that you may have.
- Breathe deeply; be conscious of the air as it flows in and out of you lungs. As the meditation goes on don’t try to control your breathing, just take note of it moving in and out… Allow it to deepen or quicken, slow or skip as it needs to. Feel it as the breath of the Goddess, and take in life force, the inspiration of the universe… Feel it as the breath of the God, as movement, as joy in living, and take in peace… Let your own breath merge with the winds, the clouds, the great currents of air that sweep our land and ocean with the turning of the earth…
- When finished say: “Hail, Chichiri, Bright Lord of the Air!”
- Be sure to ground thoroughly.

Fire Meditation
- Face Southward, sit or lie down in a comfortable position.
- Ground and center, then release all tensions and worries.
- Be conscious of the electric spark within each nerve as pulses jump from synapse to synapse. Allow your body to move and twitch as it feels necessary… Be aware of the combustion that occurs in each cell as food is burned to release energy… Let your own inner fire become one with the candle flame, bonfire, hearth fire, lightning, starlight, sunlight… Allow your fiery core to merge with the bright flame that is the Goddess… Feel her spirit feed and sustain yours… Permit your inner self to become one with the fire of the God… Absorb the sensation of burning brightly with the Lord of the Dance, feel the joy of living and moving…
- When finished say: “Hail, Tasuki, Lord of Fire!”
- Completely ground yourself.

Water Meditation
- Face Westward, sit or lie down comfortably. Ground, center, then release.
- Feel the blood flowing through the underskin river of your veins, the liquid tides of each cell of your body… You are fluid, one drop congealed out of the primal ocean that is the womb of the Great Mother… Find the calm pools of tranquillity within you, the rivers of feeling, the tides of power… Your blood is the rushing blood of the God, feel it rushing through you as the God of the Hunt… Feel the beat of your heart as the drum of the God… The red tide within you is also the blood of the Goddess, feel the calm pools of creation that lie in wait within you… Sink deep into the well of your inner mind…
- When finished say: “Hail, Hotohori, Serpent of the Watery Abyss!”
- Thoroughly ground yourself.

Earth Meditation
- Face northwards, sit or lie down comfortably. Ground, center, and release.
- Feel your bones, your skeleton, the solidity of your body… Be aware of your flesh, of all that can be touched and felt… Feel the pull of gravity, your own weight, your attraction to the earth that is the body of the Goddess… You are a natural feature, a moving mountain… Merge with all that comes from the earth: grass, trees, fruits, flowers, beasts, metals, and gems… Return to dust, to mud, to compost… Feel the pull of the God of Rebirth, you are a seedling pushing upwards through the dirt to reach the sun… Revel in your ability to grow and decline, only to grow again…
- When finished say: “Hail Tamahome, Lord of Mountains!”
- Ground yourself thoroughly.

Transformation Meditation
- Sit or lie comfortably. Then ground, center, and release.
- Whisper softly, over and over, “She changes everything She touches, and everything She touches, changes”… Feel the constant process of change within yourself, in your body, your ideas, and motions; in your work and your relationships… Be with Deity as it began, sexless, then changing, becoming female… Changing again to become male… Feel qualities of both genders inside of you… Within every unmoving stone, atoms are in constant flux. Feel the changes around you, changes you have made, changes you are about to make… Realize that even ending this meditation is part of the process of change that is life…
- When finished, say: “Hail, Noriko, the Ever-Changing One!”
- Ground yourself thoroughly.

Breathing Power Meditation
- Sit or lie comfortably. Ground, center, then release.
- Close your eyes and see the darkness that occurs naturally when your eyes are closed. Focus on this darkness, this darkness of the mind’s eye… See this black area as a space onto which you will project images…On this three-dimensional screen, see the energy all around you, filling the room you are in… The energy extends as far as your mind’s eye can see, know that reality is alive with this energy because the energy itself is alive… Imagine the energy humming or singing to you, see the colors and patterns it swirls in all around you… Sense the basic nature of this energy; allow it to flow through you as you begin to understand it… Begin breathing it in, feel the energy-matter filling your lungs… Breath it in until your entire body is filled with it, feel it energizing the very fiber of your being… Take note of the power in your body, it might relax you, or comfort you, it might excite you, or sing through your being; don’t try to shape it just let it be… When you are ready, let the energy leave your body, breathe it out or allow it to escape through your skin… Feel the chair or floor you are sitting on, allow your mind to return to the world of here and now… when you are ready open your eyes.
- Ground yourself thoroughly, gently pat all of your body while releasing the excess energy.
Phaedra's Notes:
Again, three dots (...) indicates a pause of at least a minute.
The first four are the basic elements, the last two meditations are for Spirit. Since there is no real way to embody it for each person, the meditations are to help you to formulate your own visual for it. The meditations are meant to help you get in touch with the elements as they are present within you, not to help you contact elementals.
Do NOT do all of these meditations together. Do one a day, and be sure to rest after each one. They are rather simplistic as guided meditations go, but they are powerful! Many people that I've worked with have had very strong reactions to the elements. Also, never do guided meditations while tired. For these it may be a good idea to have another person present when you attempt them for the first time as some people have a very strong reaction to the elements.
If you want you can replace the names in the meditations to what you call the Watchtowers, or you can delete the names altogether. Also the gender of the Watchtowers can be changed as well.
